Horror Laboratory

Tension Trailers (TENSE), Horror Drone (DRONE), Terror Effects (FX). (PICX-018)

Previously on Picture Puncture, we explored the darkness and depths of Braam and trailer effects through Beast Beneath (PICX-017). While those sub-shaking sounds reflect the mystery of the unknown, this time we explored something a little less… natural.

Enter the Horror Laboratory (PICX-018), a playground for strange concoctions that fuel nightmares with percussive tension and terror sound design and effects.

At the heart of this collection is an incredible sound design and sonic manipulation rig created and performed by Sean Thomas Lane. One can only describe it piece by piece — a bike frame, metal coils, tiny cymbals, pickups, a metal guitar string — but it is much more than the sum of these parts. When manipulated by Lane and brought into the context of horror and suspense, the eerie dial is turned way up. Perhaps the augmentation of these everyday objects adds a hair-raising discomfort, a twist on something familiar that becomes alien.

Within this collection, you’ll find ominous percussive builds, manipulated trailer tom strikes, drones with accents, and a plethora of options to supplement the main tracks. For horror soundtracks, psychological thrillers, teaser trailers, sci-fi dystopian dramas, and anything else that needs a little extra sound design to amp up the creepiness.
