A Life Worth Livin' (EP)

Steeped in romance and whiskey, sentimental country songs that stir the soul. (LMTL-048)

“People are still finding new ways to say things that have been around forever - like love, death, heartbreak. Just when you think there's nothing else to say about these gigantic, universal themes, somebody drops a line that just destroys you…” — Ryan Necci

This quote from an interview that singer and songwriter Ryan Necci did with us back in 2020 beautifully articulates the connection that so many of us have with country music. The themes are often larger than life, but the stories can feel intensely personal. For example, a song like “I Will Always Love You” has soared far beyond the confines of songwriter Dolly Parton’s original country arrangement. The lyrics could be about anyone, but the song delivers a story so moving, so deeply personal that it even works when you add Kevin Costner and a Hollywood blockbuster to the mix (R.I.P. Whitney).

The latest release on our LMNTL Records imprint A Life Worth Livin' (LMTL-048) continues in that tradition by tackling these “gigantic, universal themes” and exploring them through new, genuine ways. Partner that with Ryan Necci’s talent for memorable melodies and heart-on-sleeve vocals, and you’ve got a recipe for country songs that can stop you in your tracks.

Sonically, the EP touches on several subgenres including alt country, modern country, and even a super retro classic country sound on closer “We Ain’t Foolin’ Anybody Now.” No matter what label you slap on these recordings, the all-star Nashville band is primed and ready for country featuring pedal steel, touches of organ, guitars, bass, and drums.

The songs explore different stages of life and love, musing on memories of the good times and the bad. “Then You Looked Back” and title track “A Life Worth Livin’” each have a nostalgic, unquestionably sincere quality. Full of pride and reflection, the narrator recalls key moments from a long and full life. While “Something Borrowed, Someone Blue” may seem like a good fit for a wedding at first blush, this is one of those songs played during the first dance where it’s clear the couple did not truly listen to the lyrics. Opener “Any Other Night” features a huge build that finishes with Necci belting out the chorus full voice with a heart full of pain and regret. And as the heart-felt journey of this emotive EP comes to a close, “We Ain’t Foolin’ Anybody Now” finishes with a tipsy country swing, perfect for last call and one more slow dance.

A Life Worth Livin' truly has the soul of classic country, packaged up in a tidy EP that touches the romance and heartache of anyone who has dared to love. Ryan Necci delivers lines that may destroy you, but they also wrap you up in the warmest hug you’ve ever felt.
