Psych Rock

Psychedelic 60s Jam Odyssey, nicked from the archives of a California college radio station (ACPM-025)

Turn on your streaming platform of choice and you will see a plethora of era-specific shows. These stories are being told with a dizzying attention to detail that sells the illusion, including the music. And while a wall of synthesizers may do the job for shows set in the 80s like Stranger Things, the anti-establishment culture of the late 60s requires a little more nuance. It’s not all sitar and tambourine… though there is plenty of tambourine.

Welcome to the age of Psych Rock (ACPM-025). Powered by hypnotizing basslines, sweaty drums, and brazen guitars, these tracks were authentically created using era-specific techniques to channel the freedom of a flower child. This record displays the range that makes this genre stand out by featuring dreamy rock jams side by side with cerebral jazz explorations, sometimes meeting in the middle as the power of love (and recreational drugs) kicks in.

There are some sonic hallmarks that also set these recordings firmly next to the San Francisco scene of the late 60s, adding to the accuracy that our Analog Champion label prides itself on. The round and muted bass tones that begin with the first downbeat on “Before Time Before Space” and the raw and gritty drum performances on tracks like “Sky Sojourn” create a foundation for the instantly recognizable sound and feel of psychedelic rock. Quirky organs cemented their bulky selves in the soundscape along with early, dirty prog guitar riffs, fuzing jazz and rock together.

Composer Sean Wolcott, who recently recorded, produced, and mixed Damien Jurado’s upcoming record Motorcycle Madness, is no stranger to sonically capturing an era of music. Putting his stamp on a sound that can transport you to another time and place, Wolcott’s musicianship and attention to detail match and complement the work of the best set designers, costume designers, or hair and makeup artists in the business.

As always, this work is done in service of the story. And when those stories are set in ultra-specific times and places, it pays to complete the picture with music that fits just as well as the fringed vests and shag carpet.
